My sister-in-law was a new Special Agent with the FBI in Seattle at the time. One of her assignments was to act as if she were beachcombing in front of the known hideout(house). She told me she was sure they had guns aimed at her the entire time.

I'm not sure if I'm up to see the movie.

Terrifying, and I'm sure she was right. Originally, I had vowed not to see the movie either. But it was actually quite good, even though it's a Hollywood take on a real thing. Similar vibes to that movie "Heat" with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

I haven’t even made it through last week’s book suggestions, and here come more. Thanks, Leah, for educating me about my home. My mom was born in Spokane and her ancestors arrived in the area post-Civil War. My dad’s side of the family passed through the Whitman mission (prior to the Cayuse attack) on their way to the Willamette Valley—the only thing they hated as much as slavery was people of color.

I haven’t lived in Oregon in decades, but as I’ve noted before, my family members have all flirted with the worst ideas in the PNW, from Posse Comitatus to the OCA.

As a journalist, my area of interest pre-retirement was religious extremism (lots of overlap there) and public health. Thanks so much for the work you do, and for the ever-expanding book list.

Also—eeeep!—that stuff about Coos Bay! I was born and grew up in Florence. Usually those creeps stay inland, as the coast has too many tourists and hippies. (This would be why my family moved back to the valley, anyway.)

I do want to go see this film, unfortunately it isn't showing in any theaters (yet) here in NC WA. It has gotten some decent reviews. I've read the book a few years ago,The Silent Brotherhood, now re-released as The Order, it is based on. In some ways The Order was a bunch of idiots, but dangerous idiots. Living in Spokane during the heyday of the Aryan Nation was very very interesting. I might have to take a trip back to Spokane to see it...

“I forgot to bring a notepad with me to the movie theater, but grabbed a pile of napkins from the concession stand just before the theater went dark. I took six napkins of notes on the film as I watched.” Peak commitment to the craft! 👏
